Temporary Protective Status (TPS) is given to immigrants from certain designated countries which are under ongoing armed conflict (such as civil war), environmental disaster (such as earthquake or hurricane), or other extraordinary and temporary conditions.
Among other requirements, the immigrant must prove he/she is from the designated country, is in the U.S. on the required date, and is filing for TPS on the designated period.
Once TPS is granted, the immigrant cannot be removed from the U.S., can obtain employment authorization as well as travel authorization.
So far the Secretary of Homeland Security have designated the following countries for TPS: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen.
